The way I see it, misery is a universal constant and one that sometimes sticks out the most, but it is not entirely a bad thing either. We are all miserable because we are built to be miserable at a constant rate of at minimum some of the time, sometimes all of the time, and it leads some people to two things depending on their ideas of others. They either think of themselves as the only truly sapient, or want to feel as though they are not the most miserable, leading to a world more miserable; or they see others as some form of an extension of oneself and so wish for the endless quest of non-misery, leading to a world less miserable.
We can't be nice to everyone, we can't even love everyone because how often have to looked at every piece of yourself and loved what you saw? People show what they want you to see, or what they can't help but show given their hand in life and mental stability. Realistically you must know someone to truly love them, and even then you might hate them sometimes. You've been roomies with yourself for long as you can remember, self-hatred is only natural when you truly know your flaws for the first time, or fourth or eighth or twenty-fifth time.
Either way, it's not love we should strive for, it's understanding. Even my enemies I can learn to understand; who they are, what they stand for, the life story and chapter ends, the canon events, the way thoughts are led to the abyss and some can't bend back once they reach the place, when they don't know WHAT to do with themselves. If they are human, and are capable of reason, then it makes me hate them more that they choose to spread misery instead of finding a way by equation or magic or secret ancient breathing technique to lessen the misery in their world and in turn the misery in THEM. They choose to believe undesirables according to friends connected to their head via radio-transmitting tumor are actually not human at all and simultaneously must feel the human emotion of misery to ensure a swift exit any means necessary (especially if it makes them hard).
I want to study, deduce by scientific method, gather empirical data, all in the name of preventing the people that show the worst part of me. I want to ensure that change IS possible and prove that misery doesn't need to be a permanent state. In my very strong and incredibly bragadocious opinion, it should literally be the mission of humanity itself.
I just think I need to find a way to simultaneously care and not care, because it is true. When we're red hot, we burn out quick and die, when we're cold we freeze alone with no huddle and we die. Lukewarm is a difficult balance.
