Unlike prayer, which is designed to get you closer to God, spells are designed solely to get material benefits for yourself, or to inflict material harm upon people you don't like.
Therefore, the whole concept of spells is inherently materialistic, because at the end of the day, its whole and only purpose is to try and bend the rules of the material world for your own selfish reasons.
This also applies to divination btw, if that matters
