>>763933D the definitive version of the game despite its few real flaws. 3DS compared to the original:
- Bright dungeons that negatively impact the atmosphere (the remake still screws up here in many places)
- Exactly 2 ugly walkthrough Sheikah Stones, one of which is partially hidden behind a pillar in the Temple of Time, and the other is next to Link's treehouse, which you almost never go back to if you already know how to play the game.
(walkthroughs are not offensive on their own, because many kids are dumb and it was on a 2011 handheld, several years before every kid had a phone on a mobile network)
- The Water Temple has lines that guide you to where you can raise and lower the water level. (I'm fairly certain the remake also does this.)
- Dead Hand is too bright.
+ Iron boots switching as an item.
+ 4 immediately usable items instead of the 3 on N64. 2 physical buttons and 2 on the touch screen.
+ Highly respects the original art style consistently used in official promotional material from 1998 to 2026.
+ Made the right call to remaster and clean up the original audio because they were humble and did not want have faith in themselves to do completely redo the audio faithfully.
+ Controls are better.
+ Movement is smoother.
+ Framerate is higher and more stable. Mostly stable 30FPS (3DS) vs somewhat unstable 20FPS (N64).
What the remake offers over the 3DS version:
- All of the negatives I listed in this post and other posts in this thread and this
>>76257 thread. I'm not going to repost them because that would make this post too large and time consuming to make for my taste.
- Terrible BotW/TotK item selection instead of the classic, item per button system.
- Dynamic resolution scaling, which is a positive and a negative. But I see it as a negative because if you can't maintain a stable framerate and resolution, you've screwed up somewhere or are simply pushing visuals the hardware can't run well.
- Upscaling. Makes the game look awful. Yes, I have a relatively modern Nvidia GPU and have seen DLSS 4.5 and DLAA in person on many occasions. It destroys depth perception by blurring edges and makes it look like you're watching a streamed video on YouTube instead of natively rendering the game. It doesn't help that the upscaling used in the remake is FSR 1.0, which is even worse.
- SMAA for edge smoothing, but they cranked up sharpening at the same time anyway. Nintendo has totally lost the plot more than usual on both the technical and artistic sides of visual development.
+/- Manual jumping. It offers more direct player control, but in a game that was never built for that so it doesn't actually offer anything. Personally, I'm neutral on this. I wouldn't have added it, but I also think the main reason it's in is because it's a leftover system from BotW and TotK, which the game was clearly built on. Those games didn't have an auto jump feature, so it was far easier for Nintendo to use it instead of creating an auto jump feature.
+/- Dead Hand is spooky again at first glance/in some screenshots, but its animations are completely unserious, spastic Hotel Transylvania garbage. The room is still made fairly bright with neon fog. The room isn't full of of skulls anymore, so it doesn't look like a horrifying mass grave and instead just looks like a cave. There was real potential to improve on the original, but they royally screwed it up.
+ Higher framerate. 60FPS vs 30FPS.
+ More impressive graphics from a purely technological perspective.
When looked at objectively and artistically, the 3DS version is unquestionably the superior way to play the game, especially now if you play it on PC with mods that restore some of the good parts of the N64 version. The remake comes across as more of a high budget overhaul mod made by egotistical, nostalgiafag Millennials with no restraint or real concern for what actually made the original special, especially in the visual department, and to a lesser extent the audio. It's honestly a lot more like the wet fart Halo CE remake than nintendies are willing to admit, but it will be praised nonetheless because it has Nintendo and Zelda on the box.
Screencap or directly copy/paste repost this wherever you want. I want people to seethe and get mad and drum up some voices so Nintendo can eventually hear about their mistakes. Or don't, I'm really only venting for personal reasons and don't believe Nintendo will ever improve.
