>>73981I also modded my 2DS and I didn't like how limited it was emulation-wise. The most complex system you can emulate on the old 3DS is Neo-Geo because some smart giga made an emulator for the DS. Without cheating with the DS mode you can play up to GBA, and even then systems like the SNES feel like a compromise. The best emulator I know of for the system is ZXDS (ZX Spectrum emulator) because the resolutions of both systems match and you have a touchscreen keyboard.
Get a used switch 1 and mod it with a modchip if you want a good handheld to mod, otherwise either get those Chinese handhelds with android or go the FPGA and real hardware route.
>I dont see any use in buying something from the NES-N64 era unless its a handheld. Its all super easy to emulate. I wouldnt buy any console earlier than the wii/ps3/xbox 360, other than maybe a ps2 to mod o algo.My counterargument is that many systems offer a lot of cool physical features you just don't get with emulation. The first model of the Genesis/Mega Drive had an audio jack which allows for really good sound for example. Some old computers from the 80s also had commands printed on the keys, and unless you have a cheat-sheet with you at all times, you're just going to confuse yourself.
Modding is also a part of it, but FPGAs exist if you want your consoles to be physical and last long.
