What's the best Linux DE? I personally like XFCE and KDE, Gnome is shit and so are its forks, and the rest are DNBs

Gnome looks like a caca's iPad or a tablet with android geg

It's also unoptimized and runs like shit compared to other DEs

I used to use MATE, a fork of GNOME 2. I liked its simplicity and focus on mouse and keyboard rather than GNOME's niggerlicious pivot to touchscreen devices but it's rather lacking in features compared to big DEs like KDE, if that's what you're looking for. And if you (like me) want simplicity, you're better off just using a WM.

Why does it need updates tho it works fine as it is

I've been a window manager user for quite a while now. I've only started going back through the DE's to see if I can find anything I actually like. So far I've been pretty disappointed with most things I've tried.

I was hoping cosmic would match what I want, but it largely just feels unfinished still. Also the tiling mode is basically i3 like tiling which sucks.

gnome is gnome. Honstly it's not that bad all things considered, but it still feels clunky compared to the WM's I'm used to using.

KDE seems okish. Still feels clunky to me, and it's obviously just trying to go for a windows like feel in a lot of ways. Which I'm not a huge fan of.

Budgie there isn't a lot to this one. It's kind of meh. not a lot to it.

I've used xfce in the past, it's light weight and stable, also pretty highly configurable but it's not exactly in the end I think I would prefer to just use a window manager by itself. Since one of the main reasons I would use this in the past was because I could swap in my tiling Wm with xfce's builtin one.

Cinnamon I'm going to have to try again. My memory of it was that it was actually pretty good and surprisingly light weight. Maybe I'll like this one.

XFCE and Cinnamon are the best. KDE is good but it’s got some bloat, and it killed Xorg support recently, so you can only use it on Loonix and not BSDs.

Chud Mon 19 Oct 2026 15:54:19 No.42838 Report

cinnamon vvqn btw

you can for sure use it on freebsd. I haven't tried running wayland on openbsd though. But I think running kde on openbsd makes no sense in the first place anyway

XFCE is by far the nicest and smoothest experience I've had. You can use it like a window manager but you don't have to deal with programs fighting with it because it's still a normal desktop basically. Also if you want to keep using X it's good, I think KDE and GNOME dropped support but I'm not sure.

Chud Tue 20 Oct 2026 03:49:45 No.42878 Report

I had a custom setup where I had XFCE installed but changed the window manager to i3. I generally prefer not having a desktop environment because I really don't need all that extra stuff but if you like that kinda thing I would say it was pretty gemmy. There was a weird problem in MPV where the blue window border thing would appear in the window and be mostly translucent, that was annoying, it's probably fixed now tho maybe btw.

why would you genuinely consider using openbsd for anything other than server ?

It gets the job done as long as you’re not into vidya, and plus Wayland is intrinsically more secure than Xorg due to native window sandboxing and having a smaller codebase among other features.

Chud Sat 24 Oct 2026 09:15:26 No.43206 Report

Speaking of wayland, mangowm is nice if you are happy with a tilling window manager.

KDE has been brapping a lot for me lately after using the same install for almost 1 year (looks like the 'ki was right). Moving to Cinnamon, I'll play in a vm with it first.
