Is it harder than on Windows?
Do I need to look around for scripts to make certain games work or what?
How much do I need to mess with different proton builds?

I think you can run pirated exe files through proton via steam
Otherwise you can just run them through wine
Don't know about open source game launchers though

Yeah it's slightly harder than on Windows but you can make it easier to manage by using Lutris

Last winter when I was testing out Linux and tried installing E33, it would crash few seconds after booting no matter what scripts or proton builds I tried
This happened in other Unreal Engine games, what could have possibly caused this?

Chud Mon 05 Oct 2026 20:42:25 No.41075 Report

I'd imagine it'd be easier.

That game requires Microsoft Visual C++ variables to be installed in order to work. Steam installs that automatically when running on Proton on that platform (paid copy, not added as a non-Steam game). Make sure you have that and DXVK set up for that prefix for that game. Other Unreal games might need MVC++ as well

Use GOG instead. Due to the fact that their business model is about being DRM free and the fact that GOG installers are self-contained you can just use something like Lutris to download everything you need

Chud Mon 05 Oct 2026 21:21:12 No.41083 Report

Lutris is probably the easiest way to run things for other systems (also trandroid), normally uses Wine. Setup can take as little as a minute.

Idk but emulating is really conveniet since most emulators support linux

Chud Tue 06 Oct 2026 12:55:10 No.41140 Report

iirc takes a few more steps to install games via lutris & set up proton, but its doable.

Its hard to find native linux versions for games that have them. Especially up to date versions of games with constant updates

I bet it's your default value for virtual memory map something, basically because Linux is meant even for embedded shit you get some parameters like this vmmap very small

vm.max_map_count it should be uint16 - 5 or somthing, also look for othe vm namespaced parameters, I had an issue with some UE games basically overflowing their heaps or some shit so that virtual memory thing solved it
