I've been using fedora and cachy for a while now, should I make the switch to something like Arch/Gentoo?

I wouldn't switch cold turkey. Spin Gentoo up in a VM or old machine and play around

I heard the gentoo installation process is pretty long and I don't like bothering with a VM setup, when I switched to linux from windows I went all in and didn't regret it. I can just back all my stuff up anyways, I'm asking if I would actually gain something from using Gentoo or Arch as a daily driver for studying/coding/vidya etc. other than learning about linux systems. I work on a fedora machine and game on the cachy one

I've been using Gentoo for 18 months now. There's literally no upside to using it and I plan to wipe it from my computer because waiting 5 hours for my system to update is not fun anymore.
>Arch
Cachy is objectively better, but if you want maximum aryaness just use artix

No, install nix and become NIXGQD

No it isn't. It's less stable and more buggy than Arch. Artix has issues too I've seen many people who try to use Artix switch back to Arch

unless you really want to learn about linux, distrohopping (especially to/between fairly similar distros) seems like a waste of time.

if youre interested in gentoo because of its ability to have optimization (compiler flags & stuff), cachyos has most of those built in.

just stick to a single distro & use your computer ffs.

if you want to learn linux and have the free time & interest to do so, check out gentoo, slackware and LFS.

Artix fagdevs dont know how to write init scripts for shit
its worser than just using vanilla arch and then using a diff init

OP here and I also wanted to ask this, what's actually NixOS, like what is different in compared to other distros? I've seen a lot of troons liking that distro and I also heard France uses it or something, can somephono who uses it explain?

Chud Mon 05 Oct 2026 17:56:46 No.41052 Report

NixOS also all linux distros are riddled with bugs because the poogrammers are all trannies and there's no driver support on linux anyway.

Gentoo is more fun in a VM because as a rule of thumb, you WILL get greedy and break your system at least once, and trying to fix it while you have more important things to do is how you get demoralized and quit. And the installation process is not that long nor that hard if you aren't brown. Maybe like 45 minutes tops, only like 10 if you know what to do already

Basically instead of installing apps like: sudo apt install opsec, you put every app you want installed in a config text file like: install opsec, install antizog, install tnd, install tkd and then you run a command in the terminal and it installs everything and you can also pick the version of an app instead of downloading what the package manager of your distro gives you and you if something breaks you restore the previous file and everything becomes normal again. But it's too much fuckery and voodoo to make it work, I think it's worse than gentoo in setting up time comparison type shit.

That's why it's called declarative. You declare everything into config text files and then you run a command and it builds the system. When Tyrone steals your laptop you have the config text files to a usb or github or something and you rebuild the same system.

Chud Tue 06 Oct 2026 02:52:13 No.41108 Report

But you may encounter Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) problems and you need more voodoo and fuckery. Basically is a time wasting tinkertranning black hole.

For any normal person NixOS is not worth it. Gentoo is nice if you are actually going to take advantage of what it does. It's like nixos in that sense, but it's also easier to adjust to coming from another distro. Arch is probably the better of these to move to from something like fedora. You will still need to learn a few things about how to use it. But it's actually a really simple distro. Once you get used to more minimal distros like arch that don't make all the choices for you it's hard to go back to something like fedora or mint.

Thanks for explaining, I heard it was about muh config files before
>>41124
This is the type of answer I was looking for, I think a system primarily configured for my own usecases and only install shit I need to minimize bloat and occasional breakage is probably what I would enjoy the most.

So should I just treat gentoo as a toy?
