well, i think mate and trinity are good. xfce is good too. plasma can be good if you acclimate yourself to all the stupid bullshit it has and configure it just right. if you want to use a window manager, e16 and icewm are both good - especially if you use them with the mate programs like caja, pluma, engrampa, and all that business.
