Being not in 4/4 is only impressive or cool or good or creative if the music still works sequentially. Like with early soft machine or MAGMA or with Van Der Graaf Generator or Gentle Giant. The difference is that Frank Zappas music objectively on every single level doesn't. It lacks structural flow. The songs don't work in my opinion. Barely call them songs really. That's only impressive or good if it contextually "works". Zappa doesn't use nearly as non standard song structures or as avant gaurde use of sequencing as CAN or The Velvet Underground did either. And Classical Music influencing rock at all would have just lead the british wave of prog rock to use odd time signatures anyway. Most of those bands were not genuinely directly zappa inspired in any remotely tangible aspect and still would have ended up doing it regardless. The Beatles and The Grateful Dead and even The Velvet Underground at one piint were also using le heckin epic odd time signatures. Its not as unique nor as complicated to do as you think im assuming.

He simply lacked any sense of composure or timing. He lacked a sense of placement. You can play in odd time signatures within a rock context and still have this. Christian Vander more than proved that. Faust more than proved that. Maybe it had some novelty y at the time. But some 80 years later it simply doesn't hold up. But sure thing downie,im the one that doesn't get it. And Frank Zappa is really actually secretly super heckin challenging or whatever. I dont think you realize how easy it is to just not do a 4 count.
