Apes like Koko and Kanzi never really understood sign language. Both of them did random signs in hopes that they receive a reward. If there wasn't a reward involved, they wouldn't care about sign language.

not op but it can be looked up online, a lot of sources say so, but even then this fully makes sense, language as complex as ours is one of the very few things thats unique to humans. no animal has ever come close to human language, as op said, its all because they were trained with a reward system
